The New South Wales government has announced that 53% of all licensees (or three million drivers) in the state have opted to adopt the digital driving license (DLL).
The DLL was launched in November 2019 and is available through the Service NSW app. Blacktown, Kellyville and Castle Hill remain the top three suburbs in DDL downloads.
“This is great news and a strong indication that customers want to buy less portfolio,” said Digital Minister Victor Dominello.
“We want to make customers’ lives easier and technology is part of the solution. DDL is safe, comfortable and hassle-free.”
Last September, the NSW Parliament passed legislation granting the DDL the same legal status as a physical driving license, and it is now accepted by the police in all Australian states and territories.
Despite this, NSW drivers are still advised to have the physical license as a backup when traveling on the interstate.
The state government continues to work on digitizing more licenses and identifications. In March, the test of a digital photo card was completed, and in April, the digitization of all commercial licenses began with the digital white card.
Due to the success of DLL, other states across the country have followed suit.
Last year, information on thousands of New South Wales driving license holders was breached, and reports indicating a cloud storage folder containing more than 100,000 images were left open.
Cyber Security NSW confirmed that a business entity was responsible for non-compliance with the scanned driver’s license images. At the time, he said it was the responsibility of the business entity to investigate this matter and notify customers if their data had been breached.

Despite the incident, the state government has reinforced that the DDL is “securely hosted on the NSW Service application which is locked with a PIN and can be accessed offline.”
“It provides additional levels of security and protection against identity fraud, compared to the plastic driver’s license,” the state government said.
