Many on-premises S / 4 customers use public cloud services. While getting infrastructure services for SAP environments is fairly straightforward, implementing and operating them requires specialized software.
From a customer meeting with an infrastructure manager of a medium-sized company: first, we talked about its successful S / 4 conversion and project development, as well as the local S / 4 infrastructure, which it continued to function well during the process. In the second half of the meeting, the focus was on hybrid cloud computing. Specifically, we talked about hiring public cloud services through Microsoft Azure.
The operations team had already done a lot of preliminary work: several cloud systems were already being used for testing. Now, the company wanted to use larger SAP systems, including high-availability systems. It was also important to be able to set up a highly automated system with optimized supply and deployment and a wide variety of applications. Its goal is to apply a Suse Blueprint (transformation of SAP environment with Suse) in four steps: Automation, Management, Evolution, Operation. This article is about step 1: automation for supply and deployment.
What Suse SLES offers for SAP applications
The Infrastructure Manager was extremely understanding that the Linux Suse Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) operating system for SAP applications version 15.2 provides the standard open source Salt tool for deploying SAP infrastructures in public clouds. Suse also offers Terraform, which can be used for automatic delivery. SLES for SAP applications is already used in conjunction with S / 4.
What are Terraform and Salt from? Simply put, Terraform is open source software that guarantees the supply and implementation of infrastructure defined by IaaS vendors. In addition, the settings can be saved so that they can be reused at almost any time. Subsequent adjustments are also possible. Terraform drastically minimizes the effort that would otherwise be required for provisioning and deployment. Terraform is supported by several public cloud providers such as AWS, Google, Microsoft and others.
In collaboration with SAP
The award-winning Salt open source automation tool focuses on both deployment and configuration. In addition, Salt can also be used to install, configure, and deploy entire software packages.
Terraform and Salt are elements of the “SAP Environment Lifecycle with Suse” initiative, which covers four topics: Automation with supply and deployment, Management with operation, Evolution with optimization and transformation and Operation with monitoring and reporting. Terraform is used for supply, Salt for deployment. As for the solution, SLES is used for SAP and Suse Manager applications. In addition, Microsoft Cloud Wizzards, Suse High Availability and saptune underpin the automation step with provisioning and deployment.
The initiative is based on many years of cooperation with SAP and the requirements for the use of SAP infrastructures, both local and increasingly in the cloud. Thus, Suse provides SAP users with solutions and technologies to implement their SAP hybrid cloud concepts in a streamlined, reliable, efficient, and cost-effective way.
