Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, said it will not require vaccinated shoppers or workers to wear a mask in their U.S. stores unless state or local laws say otherwise.
Vaccinated buyers can pass without masks immediately, the company said. Vaccinated workers may stop carrying them on Tuesday. As an incentive, Walmart said it will offer workers $ 75 if they prove they have been vaccinated.
Customers will not be asked, but will maintain an “honor system” regarding their vaccination status, Walmart said.
Workers, however, will have to answer “yes” to one vaccination question in a daily health assessment in order to run out of masks, the company said in a note to employees posted on its corporate website.
“Integrity is one of our core values and we trust that partners will respect this principle when they respond,” the note states. To obtain the bonus, workers must show the original vaccination certificate.
The Bentonville, Arkansas-based company noted that it offers vaccines at its more than 5,100 Walmart and Sam’s Club pharmacies and through special events.
Walmart is the largest employer in the country with approximately 1.5 million employees in the U.S., including those at Sam’s Club, distribution centers, and in corporate and managerial jobs.
